16 Mar First Vermiculture DEMO Centre in Europe

Thanks to the RAISE Youth project, the First Vermiculture DEMO Center in Europe has been established in Casarrubuelos (Madrid – Spain): a collaborative green center of circular economy, with a surface of 2450m² to promote experimentation and dissemination of innovative agri-environmental activities.

Casarrubuelos’s DEMO Center also collaborates with the DEMO Centers created in Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania “to promote digital services and rural tourism, thus strengthening the exchange of experiences between institutions and the capacity to generate services among European entrepreneurs.

Casarrubuelos DEMO Center is divided into three work areas:

– One area, of urban home gardens, where families harvest their own vegetables. A community is created, using the DEMO Center facilities, exchanging knowledge, advice, doubts and their own vegetable production with other participants, so that a continuous flow of information is generated between the participants and the trainers, so that the whole group can benefit from the knowledge and resources of the whole community. It also establishes a “creative” meeting place for the community.

– Another area, is the composting area, where vegetable waste from the households of the families involved in the project and also from other interested families – who join this initiative because they believe in the added value and improvement that this new organic waste reuse system means for the municipality – is composted to obtain ecological compost and also to reduce the cost of waste removal (as well as reducing the carbon footprint).

All of this is in line with the broad sustainability objectives of the municipality of Casarrubuelos, which will involve the recycling of most of the organic waste generated in the municipality. In addition to positioning Casarrubuelos as an innovative municipality in terms of circular economy at both national and European level.

– And finally, we have a third area: the vermicomposting area, where the quality of this compost is improved and transformed into worm humus (which is currently the best organic fertilizer).

This organic compost of the highest quality is distributed among the participating neighbours and is also being used to fertilize the public parks and gardens of the municipality of Casarrubuelos.

In addition, RAISE DEMO Center in Casarrubuelos also provides training on Sustainability, Circular Economy, urban home gardens, general gardening and recycling.

Primer Centro Demostrativo de Lombricultura de Europa en Casarrubuelos

Gracias al Proyecto RAISE Youth se ha establecido en Casarrubuelos (Madrid – España) el Primer Centro Demostrativo de Lombricultura en Europa: un centro colaborativo de economía circular, que cuenta con una superficie de 2450m² para impulsar la experimentación y la difusión de actividades agroambientales innovadoras.

El centro  colabora también con los centros demostrativos creados en Croacia, Bulgaria y Rumanía “para promover los servicios digitales y el turismo rural, fortaleciendo así el intercambio de experiencias entre instituciones y la capacidad para generar servicios entre emprendedores europeos.

El DEMO Center de Casarrubuelos está dividido en tres zonas de trabajo:

– Una zona, de huertos urbanos domésticos, donde las familias cosechan sus propias hortalizas. Creándose comunidad, utilizando las instalaciones del DEMO Center, intercambiando conocimientos, consejos, dudas y la propia producción vegetal con otros participantes, de manera que se genera un continuo flujo de información entre los participantes y los formadores, para que el grupo completo se pueda beneficiar del conocimiento y de los recursos de toda la comunidad. Estableciéndose además un lugar de encuentro “creativo” para la comunidad.

– Otra zona, es el área de compostaje, donde los residuos vegetales de los hogares de las familias implicadas en el proyecto y también de otras familias interesadas -que se suman a esta iniciativa porque creen en el valor añadido y la mejora que supone para el municipio este nuevo sistema de reutilización de residuos orgánicos- se compostan para obtener compost ecológico y también para reducir el coste de la retirada de residuos (además de reducir la huella de carbono).

Todo ello en línea con los amplios objetivos de sostenibilidad del municipio de Casarrubuelos, que supondrá el reciclaje de la mayor parte de la basura orgánica generada en el municipio. Además de situar a Casarrubuelos como un municipio innovador en materia de economía circular tanto a nivel nacional como europeo.

– Y por último, tenemos una tercera zona: la zona de vermicompostaje, donde se mejora la calidad de este compost y se transforma en humus de lombriz (que actualmente es el mejor abono orgánico).

Este compost orgánico de la más alta calidad se reparte entre los vecinos participantes y también se está utilizando para abonar los parques y jardines públicos del municipio de Casarrubuelos.

Además, en el DEMO Center de Casarrubuelos, también se realizan formaciones en materia de sostenibilidad y reciclaje de materia orgánica, y se recogen y potencian las ideas aportadas por los miembros de la comunidad.
